Cannabis edibles are food products infused with cannabinoids, consumed for either recreational or therapeutic purposes. Unlike smoking or vaporization, edibles work through the digestive system, resulting in effects that vary in intensity and duration.

Variety and Preferences

Among the most popular types of edibles are cookies, brownies, and muffins, but practically any food can be enhanced with light hemp. This offers a wide range of options for those who prefer a discreet and controlled consumption of cannabis.

Benefits of Consuming Edibles

The primary advantage of edibles is the duration and potency of their effects, which can last much longer compared to inhalation. The liver metabolizes the active ingredients, converting THC into a more potent form, 11-hydroxy-THC. This prolongs the effect and allows THC to more easily cross the blood-brain barrier.

Another benefit is the ability to precisely dose the intake thanks to product labels that indicate the exact amount of cannabinoids per serving. This is particularly useful compared to traditional consumption methods, where dosing can be more uncertain.

Using edibles provides a more discreet option for consuming cannabis, as they are odorless and easily mistaken for regular food. This is a significant advantage in social contexts where cannabis consumption might be stigmatized.

Preparation of Edibles

To prepare edibles at home, two key ingredients are cannabutter and cannabis oil. These can be made by decarboxylating cannabis flowers, then cooking them with butter or oil to infuse the active ingredients. These compounds can then be used in any recipe that requires butter or oil, offering a simple method to create homemade edibles.

How to Decarboxylate Cannabis Flowers

Decarboxylation is an essential process to activate the cannabinoids in cannabis, such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), which would otherwise be in an inactive, acidic form (like THCA and CBDA). This transformation process occurs through heat.

To effectively decarboxylate cannabis at home, you need to:

  • Finely chop the cannabis flowers. This increases the surface area exposed to heat, ensuring more uniform decarboxylation.
  • Spread the chopped cannabis evenly on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. This helps prevent the cannabis from sticking or burning directly on the tray.
  • Then bake the tray in a preheated oven at 120°C (248°F) and cook for about 30-40 minutes. This time may vary slightly depending on the variety of cannabis and the efficiency of the oven.
  • Once decarboxylation is complete, remove the tray from the oven and let the cannabis cool completely. At this point, the cannabinoids will be active and ready for use in edibles or other preparations.

This process can produce strong odors, so a well-ventilated environment is necessary. Decarboxylation is crucial to maximize the effectiveness of cannabis edibles, transforming the cannabinoids into a form that the body can absorb and use more effectively.

How to Prepare Cannabutter (or Hemp Butter)

  • Decarboxylate the cannabis flowers.
  • Melt butter in a pot and add the decarboxylated cannabis.
  • Cook on low heat, stirring frequently, for about 2-3 hours.
  • Filter the mixture to remove plant residues and let it cool.

How to Prepare Cannabis Oil (or Hemp Oil)

  • Decarboxylate the cannabis flowers.
  • Mix the decarboxylated flowers with the chosen oil and cook on very low heat or in a water bath for 2-3 hours.
  • Filter the oil and use it in recipes.

The Growth of the Edibles Market

Edibles represent a growing part of the cannabis market, offering an effective alternative to more traditional consumption methods. Edibles are popular among cannabis consumers because they are easy to use and discreet. Moreover, they provide powerful and lasting effects, suitable for both beginners and experts.

Whether you are new to the world of cannabis or already experienced, edibles offer a potent, lasting, and discreet way to enjoy the benefits of cannabis.
